5 Minutes With Jenny McIver

For McCool Travel’s 70th travel profile, I am pleased to present Jenny McIver. Jenny plans events, works for ESPN (nice), and is a RTW veteran. RTW, you ask? That is insider lingo for round the world flights. On her website, RTW in 30 days, Jenny shares her experiences and how-tos.
Jenny McIver’s bio:
“A veteran road warrior, Jenny McIver spends most of her time crisscrossing the globe racking up nearly 200,000 miles annually and countless hotel nights. In 2013, Money Magazine dubbed her the “Miles Maven” for her ability to turn those business travel rewards into an annual month-long luxury trek around the world. Her book, The Grown-Up’s Guide to Globetrotting, helps other aspiring nomads plan Bucket List trips of their own. In 9 previous Round-the-World trips, she has visited and written about more than 165 countries on all 7 continents. You can follow her journeys at www.RTWin30days.com.”

Hometown…
Ft. Myers, FL but I’ve lived in Atlanta, GA for most of my adult life
Always in my luggage…
My Nikon DSLR, my iPad, & a Wall Street Journal for airplane reading (though I often have to get the Europe or Asia edition)
3 favorite home-away-from-home places…

  1. Honolulu
  2. Auckland
  3. Bangkok

A favorite travel memory is…
Setting foot on my 7th & final continent, Antarctica. The journey to get there was rough (and expensive) but it’s the closest I’ll probably ever come to visiting another planet. Definitely the most incredible travel experience of my life.

3 favorite travel brands…

  1. Starwood Hotels
  2. Delta Air Lines
  3. TripAdvisor

3 money-saving travel tactics I use are…
As a frequent business traveler, airline miles & hotel points are the top 2 for me.

  1. Delta miles have rewarded me with 10 Round-the-World tickets
  2. Starwood points helped pay for much of the hotel expenses on those trips
  3. My 3rd favorite is AirBnb, renting apartments for longer stays really helps reduce my overall travel costs

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are…

  1. I’m a runner and I love to run in a new city, it’s the best way to get to know it
  2. I’ve also developed a passion for photography in the past few years so that’s a fun pastime
  3. my favorite thing to do is watch a great sunset from a new vantage point anywhere around the world

8 word (or less) travel mantra…
Since I run my business from the road while I travel, my travel motto has always been “Why work from home when you can work from Rome?” But since that’s too long, it really boils down to this simple mantra, “Just go.” Stop making excuses & just get out there and travel!

favorite non-travel website (besides your own)…
ESPN.com (especially during college football season)
favorite cheap eat…
Bangkok street food
recent discovery…
The Greek Island of Symi. Stopped there for a few days last summer and ended up staying a week. It’s an incredible little island mostly visited by day-trippers from Rhodes. But when the day-trippers leave at 4pm each day it’s just you, the locals, and the heavenly views.
