5 Minutes With Max Hartshorne of GoNomad

For McCool Travel’s 174th travel interview, I am pleased to present Max Hartshorne. I have known Max online for many years and from a few travel shows. We were able to more closely chat travel stuff on a recent media trip in South Carolina and I even took him to his first Krispy Kreme experience (he bought!). Yes, it IS all fun and games.
Max Hartshorne’ bio: “Max Hartshorne has been the editor of the GoNOMAD.com travel website since 2002. Over the past decade, he has had the privilege of working with writers and publishing travel articles about nearly every country in the world. He is a regular contributor to American Forces Radio and Around the World Travel, where he shares his travel reports. Max speaks frequently about social media, travel writing, and how to create an online publication that earns enough money to become your full-time job. He is set to speak at Traverse19 in Trentino, Italy in early June and is a regular presenter at the NY Times Travel Show, TBEX, and PRSA. His blog, Readuponit, has been regularly published since 2004 and is about the people he meets while traveling, the places he visits, and life as a travel editor, grandfather, and bon vivant.”

HOMETOWN …
I was born in Brooklyn but raised in Blawenburg New Jersey. For the past 41 years, I’ve lived in Western Massachusetts in the farming village of South Deerfield.
ALWAYS IN MY LUGGAGE …
I always bring along my CPAP for sleep apnea, (a breathing device), a power strip to charge my devices, my second iPhone to use for music.
3 FAVORITE HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME PLACES …

  • Eagles Mere Pennsylvania, in the endless mountains where our family gathers every summer
  • Blawenburg NJ, my home town
  • Lenox, Mass home of Tanglewood Music series where I love to go every summer to hear the Boston Symphony.

A FAVORITE TRAVEL MEMORY …
Walking down by the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia early in the morning, listening to music on my earbuds going to meet a guide for a day of sightseeing. AND Riding a horse with a group of writers over a beautiful stretch of mountains in Glacier Country, Montana and thinking THIS, THIS, THIS is what it’s ALL ABOUT!

3 FAVORITE TRAVEL BRANDS …
I like Enterprise Rent-a-car, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Marriott Hotels. Friendly people, new airplanes, easy to use wifi in their hotels.
3 MONEY-SAVING TRAVEL TACTICS I USE …

  1. get invited on a press trip where they pay
  2. use Google Flights to set up alerts for fare drops
  3. join every loyalty club for each hotel chain, airline, and rental car agency

3 WAYS THAT I HAVE FUN WHILE TRAVELING …
I always have fun traveling—out of the ordinary into a new routine with new sites, smells and tastes, what’s not to love?
8 WORD (OR LESS) TRAVEL MANTRA …
“First thing you mention is the story lead.”

FAVORITE NON-TRAVEL WEBSITE …
Reddit
MOST MEMORABLE SOUVENIR …
The photos in my online albums and on my walls are the best memories of 20 years of travel.
FAVORITE CHEAP EAT …
In expensive places like Iceland and Norway, visit 7-11 and by a few tins of sardines and crackers. It’s right next to the $9 hotdogs and $12 beers!
RECENT DISCOVERY …
I went skiing in Turkey in January, I never knew about that!
I AM FORTUNATE TO HAVE MET …
I’m fortunate to be a member of the travel tribe, who I get together with during TBEX, NY Times Travel Show, and other events like Travel South. I love the people who write and publish travel like I do.
I WOULD LIKE TO MEET …
I’d love to hang out with Bill Clinton or President Obama. Because that’s how Presidents should act!
