Hometown…

Collette is from Mountain Lakes, New Jersey and Scott is from Pendleton, Indiana. We met in Las Vegas and now live in Hermosa Beach, California.

Always in my luggage…

1. Our Sony camera – we love documenting everything on our travels
2. Ear plugs & sleep mask – saviors when it comes to jet lag
3. Running sneakers – we always love to adventure during our travels
3 favorite home-away-from-home places…

  1. Italy – anywhere and everywhere!
  2. Canggu, Bali
  3. Cape Town, South Africa

A favorite travel memory is…

We rented a beat up camper van in New Zealand where we drove around the South Island for 2 weeks. It was raw travel at its finest—just the two of us and the open road. When we saw a mountain that spoke to us, we would pull over and hike it. If we saw a lake we wanted to jump into, we pulled over and hopped in. We slept under the stars, cooked rice and beans in the back of the van, and enjoyed each others company in the most pure way possible. The entire experience was the definition of “young, wild and free.”

3 favorite travel brands…

  1. Rimowa luggage – major goals right there!
  2. Lululemon – for both Scott & Collette (Scott recommends the ABC “Anti-ball crushing” pants for travel)
  3. Sony for camera gear – we use the Sony a7II

3 money-saving travel tactics I use are…

  1. Never eat by a tourist area. Walk a few blocks away from a tourist attraction to get an authentic and more budget friendly meal.
  2. Rent an apartment with a kitchen. We save money by eating breakfast / making coffee at home. There is never a need for a $40 breakfast!
  3. Always ask for a better rate. Whether we’re at a restaurant, hotel, AirBnb, taxi, etc., we always ask for a better price. The worst that someone says is, “no.” The best they can say is, “yes, we’ll give you a discount!” This doesn’t work that well in the U.S., but it definitely works well abroad.

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are …

  1. Leaving time open for chance encounters and experiences. We don’t like to pack our schedules to the brim.
  2. Dropping into CrossFit classes in a new country/city. We’re able to meet locals, get a great workout, and learn about less touristy parts of our destination.
  3. Getting out of our comfort zone and doing things that scare us. In New Zealand, we bungee jumped; In Italy, we paraglided over the mountains of Lake Como. We may not do this in our every day lives, but we feel that it’s important to do the things that scare you. Those butterflies in the stomach are the essence of what life is all about.

8 word (or less) travel mantra…

Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You

favorite non-travel website

New York Times if we’re feeling motivated. Netflix if we want to “chill.”

favorite cheap eat …

Ramen! While Cup o’ Noodles brings us back to our college days, we’re talking more of the gourmet ramen (that still clocks in under $10). Luckily there are fantastic ramen restaurants right at home in Los Angeles.

I am fortunate to have met …

We were lucky enough to have met Kevin Liles, the former president of Def Jam Records while we were in Cartagena, Colombia. It was a chance encounter in a little cigar shop in the old city. We shared cigars, local rum, and stories about life. It was at the very beginning of our trip and he commended us for taking the time to travel together.

I would like to meet …

Mike Rowe! We recently listened to a podcast with him and were blown away by his incredible vocabulary, joie de vivre, and thirst for life.

  1. What a lovely looking couple. They look so happy. 70 countries is the same as us and quite an achievement. Funny that they picked such different things to pack and places they like. Good article!
